Zakzaky’s Possible Bail Under Threat As Judiciary Workers Set To Shutdown Courts Nationwide

The much anticipated court appearance next week Thursday, 4th October 2018 by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, during which the court was to deliver a ruling on a bail application that could pave the way for his freedom appears to be fading away, as judicial workers nationwide are poised for a strike action beginning tomorrow.

In the absence of any last minute change of plan, judicial activities would be paralysed nationwide on Thursday as court workers have given notice to commence strike after close of work today.

President of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Comrade Marwan Mustapha Adamu said the strike is in compliance with the directive of the nation’s three labour centres to down tools after the 14-day ultimatum given the Federal Government to commence the implementation of a new minimum wage regime.

In a statement issued early on Wednesday, Adamu directed all JUSUN members nationwide to comply with the warning strike by the organised labour to press home their demand for a new minimum wage.

Part of the statement reads: “Effective from Wednesday midnight, all courts in the country must remain close pending a counter instruction from the national secretariat of the union.

“As an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), all members of JUSUN are to stay back at home from Wednesday midnight , 26th September, 2018. Also, all courts are expected to remain shut until further directive from the national Secretariat of our great union.

“A committee in conjunction with the NLC and other stakeholders was put in place to go round to ensure compliance with the directive”.

“It would be recalled that the three Labour centres in Nigeria have issued a 14 days ultimatum for Federal government to reconvene the minimum wage tripartite committee reviewing the national minimum wage or face industrial action.”
