Vision FM Must Desist From Continued Hate Campaign Against The Islamic Movement In Nigeria

We have observed series of hate campaigns against the Islamic Movement in Nigeria being aired by an Abuja-based FM radio station, Vision FM, in collaboration with some FM radio stations in some selected states. This has gone on in the past week under the guise of airing a documentary by some so-called Shia scholars.

The apparent sole purpose of the documentary is to label the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and its leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, as terrorists who are not true Muslims. Such mischievous hate campaigns are potentially inciting, capable of instigating a large section of the public to carry out mass attacks and genocide against members of the Movement in the aftermath of the upcoming general elections.

Vision FM radio didn’t find it fit to invite members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria to balance the discussion but has gone hysterical oozing from all channels various baseless allegations by these so-called Shia Clerics that featured in the programs. Undoubtedly, they are acting according to scripts as directed by the National Security Adviser, Major General Mohammed Babagana Monguno. This much was divulged by one of the sponsored Shia cleric during one of the programs.

This was the exact way the Rwandan genocide against the minority Tutsi population started in the 90s, when certain radio stations incited their mass murder by the Hutu majority.

We therefore call the urgent attention of the general public to this latest devilish machination by the security agencies in the country. The sponsors of this radio campaigns against the Islamic Movement should be aware that they would be held responsible should any unwarranted killings happen in the next few days.

The management of Vision FM radio station and its affiliates in some states are hereby advised to stop further airing of such vile vituperation against the Islamic Movement in the interest of peaceful coexistence of various people in Nigeria.

In conclusion, we reiterate our demand for the immediate and unconditional release of our Leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and others in illegal detention since 2015.

Legal Action should taken against the FM without delay to serve as a deterrence.
