Tens Of Thousands Throng Abuja To Mark Sheikh Zakzaky 68th Birthday With Renewed Demand For His Release

Tens of thousands of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and their supporters and sympathizers today thronged Abuja to mark the 68th birthday of the leader of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, whose birthday was marked at the weekend, with a renewal of the unequivocal call for his immediate release.

The ailing Sheikh and his wife remain unjustifiably in detention since December 2015 after the Nigerian Army attacked their residence killing more than a thousand people including three of his sons despite an Abuja Federal High court judgement that ruled that their detention is a clear violation of their fundamental rights and therefore should be unconditionally released.

The government has contemptuously continued to detain him and the wife despite their deteriorating health conditions, made worse by the injuries inflicted on them both during the December 2015 military genocidal attacks. The Department of State Security (DSS) has further employed all sorts of tactics known and unknown to block their access to adequate medical care till date.

The Sheikh had lost one eye during the attack and risks completely losing his sight as long as urgent measures to ameliorate the situation are not taken. He also suffered a stroke in detention more than one year ago while in detention. The wife, who also received several bullet wounds during the December 2015 attacks, is currently only ambulating with the aid of a wheelchair as she has lost functionality of both her lower limbs.
