A call for the release of the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has been made by Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, the renowned Wahabi scholar, who until recently, was famed in his opposition to the Movement and its leader.
The Islamic Scholar called on Federal Government to release the Islamic Movement of Nigeria Leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky while closing this year’s Tafsir lecture at Sultan Bello Mosque today, Sunday.
Sheikh Gumi said the government need to obey court orders to set the detained Sheikh free from detention. Gumi said there is no basis for his continued detention since he has been ordered by court to be set free.
He said the Federal government should also dialogue with Sheikh Zakzaky instead of keeping him in detention. “Here in Nigeria, I will like the government to also release the leader of Shiites, Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. ” They are not holding him ( Zakzaky) because he is shiites or anything. They should release and negotiate with him. Government should understand that it’s not right to disobey court orders. “The government must lead by example by releasing him,” he said.
This unexpected call came as a surprise because for many years Sheikh Gumi has been averse to the Movement and had on several occasions called for the killing of all Shiites. It reached a point when the Islamic Movement had to petition the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) over his provocative inciting preachings on Radio Nigeria, Kaduna.
