Thursday July 18th, 2019 has been fixed by the Kaduna State High Court to hear the motion for bail on health grounds filed by the defense lawyers of the ailing leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife.
The health situation of the duo have continued to deteriorate in detention, particularly that of the Sheikh, who is reportedly said to have suffered yet another mild stroke in addition to the very high toxic levels of heavy metals including lead.
Last year in January, the Sheikh suffered the first stroke in detention, a situation which forced the authorities to allow him see doctors of his choice for the first time since his detention. The authorities were also forced to allow a public glimpse of the Sheikh on national television in order to dispel rumours making rounds at the time that he died in detention.
Thereafter, he was arraigned before a Kaduna High Court where he is standing trial on hurriedly thought out baseless charges. The court had denied an earlier bail application on the grounds that he may jump bail and refuse to present himself for the trial considering that two of those standing trial with him remained at large.
However, his health condition continued to deteriorate by the day. In January this year, the defense lawyers requested the court to allow foreign specialist doctors to assess him. That assessment was eventually done in April, and considering their findings had recommended that the Sheikh would benefit from further expert management abroad.
It is on the basis of these that a fresh application was filed seeking for his release to attend to his dire medical condition as a matter of urgency.
