The mammoth crowd that attended this years grand Maulud event at the famous Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna to mark the occasion of the birthday of the essence of humankind, Prophet Muhammad (S) were full of cheers as members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria paraded the arena with a giant, life-size portrait of their incarcerated leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky.
A section of the crowd were heard chanting “Free Zakzaky” as the faithfuls marched passed the podium raising the large to life poster of the embattled Sheikh.
Sheikh Zakzaky has been in the forefront of Muslim unity, and has used the occasion of the Maulud to promote such through what the Islamic Movement tags “Unity Week” during which scholars from different Islamic persuasion are invited to speak on an aspect of the faith from their own understanding. That way others get to hear and appreciate the other people’s understanding and perspectives, thus fostering unity and love. This year’s Maulud event however is the fifth being celebrated with the Sheikh remaining unduly in detention.
In attendance were so many dignitaries from within and outside the state including a former governor of Kaduna, Alhaji Ramalan Yero.
It was reliably gathered that the current governor of Kaduna had tried hard to ensure that the event never took place at all. However, the organizers doggedly pursued the matter and had to draw on the goodwill of a certain Minister in Abuja before they could secure access to the stadium at the eleventh hour.
The event went on smoothly with no reported incidents.
