IMN Marks Anniversary Of Free Zakzaky Judgment With A Roundtable With CSOs, Activists

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria marked the first year anniversary of the landmark judgement of the Abuja Federal High Court that ruled as unconstitutional the continued detention of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and consequently ordered his release with a roundtable meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Human Rights activists, Lawyers and selected Journalists in Abuja, which resulted in the very successful Sitout in the Heart of Abuja that lasted nearly 100 days before the government could no longer bear it.

The roundtable, which was held on Saturday, 2nd December 2017, had as its theme, “Enforcing Fundamental Human Rights & Rule of Law Through Social Struggle in Nigeria: A Case Study of Free Zakzaky Campaign – Problems, Progress and Prospects.” It was well attended by National and international CSOs, activists and journalists.

It was following that roundtable meeting that a decision to conduct a daily sit-out at the Unity Fountain was taken. The sit-out turned out to be very successful and it lasted nearly a hundred days before it was forcefully dispersed.

It will be recalled that last year, a Federal High Court in Abuja presided by Hon Justice Gabriel Kolawole had ordered the release of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife. The Buhari government has been in defiance of this for three years now.

This year a similar meeting is scheduled to review the campaign to free Sheikh Zakzaky and map out new strategies to execute in the struggle to free Sheikh Zakzaky and other prisoners of conscience.
